Homework House
Wednesday, September 12, 2018 8:50 AM

Need a place to work on homework? Homework House is here for you!

Homework House provides a safe space for middle and high school students to work on homework after school on Tuesdays from 3:10 PM to 5 PM in the lounge at St. John’s Lutheran Church (49th and Nicollet).

Students of different ages and backgrounds sit side-by-side to motivate and mentor each other. While it is our goal to have tutors available, Homework House is not a tutoring session. We invite students of all academic strengths and interests — Homework House is a place for all.

Interested? Just show up! No pre-registration necessary. All are welcome.

Student-Led Goal-Setting Meetings
Wednesday, September 12, 2018 8:20 AM

You’re invited to student-led, goal-setting meetings on Wednesday, September 26, which is an early release day.

Meetings begin at 2:00 and continue until 7:30 PM. Each family will have a 15-minute slot to meet as a crew (student, guardian, and teacher) to discuss and create a plan for the success of the student.

The student will lead the discussion and share their strengths and areas for growth based on their grades and behavior. Leading this discussion helps develop essential skills that adolescents need to take responsibility for their education. Learn more about the value of student-led goal-setting meetings in this article from Education World magazine.

This meeting gives the student an opportunity to look at their progress and set an intentional goal for the year. Teachers and family members will then discuss ways to improve and support this goal. Students will practice running the meeting during Crew prior to the actual meeting.

If you have questions about grades, curriculum, or behavior, feel free to check the parent portal, email your student’s teachers, and/or stop by our drop-in conferences on October 16 from 4:30 - 8:00 PM and October 17 from 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM.

Students will bring home a letter with time slots to sign up for goal-setting meetings. If you have specific questions about goal-setting meetings, contact your student’s Crew leader.

Friday Morning Greeters
Wednesday, September 12, 2018 7:50 AM

JPS would like to extend a warm invitation to all families to join us for Friday Morning Greeters. Gather at 9:00 AM for coffee and socializing outside of the auditorium by the Nicollet Ave. entrance. Then, when students enter the school at 9:15 AM, greet them with high fives, kind words, and smiles!

Time commitment for greeters is from 9:00 to 9:30 AM or whatever works for you. This event happens every Friday morning that school is in session. It is a great way to share with our students that we care and is also a wonderful way to get to know other families. Bring along a grandma, uncle, your small children, and any extended family members who would like to join us!
